what is mnemotope?

mnemotope is our community magazine, the name of which comes from a term that’s used in writings about archaeological finds. a mnemotope is something (often historical) that compresses the viewer’s experience of time; allowing them to be in the period in which the object came to be, at the site when it was excavated and in the museum looking at it.

mnemotope magazine takes that as its inspiration - it acts as a place in which lots of stories from across timelines and borders can sit together, and cultural memories can interact. it exists to create and hold the expression and knowledge of its diverse community, and because of this, the contents of the magazine are wonderfully varied; some confessional poetry, some hastily notated recipes, some fiction, some history, lots of other things, all submitted during our open call.

the reason we started the magazine is to gather and hold space for all voices from all backgrounds. we don't put restrictions on grammar, writing style or form, which traditional publishing often uses to exclude people from print. your stories, observations, drawings are just as important as any!! for our next open call, empty your sketchbooks your notes apps your box of letters under the bed your voice and your stories are so lovely on paper, and so very necessary too

this edition feels quite scenic. most of the pieces bring you to specific places and times, travelling with our contributors as the pages turn. many of the drawings in this edition feel shadowy, soft edges against the crisp writing alongside it. this is what we drew our cover from - two travelling shadows, reflecting the life above them.
