kind ground, black butter - book launch and exhibition
at ohagan design, 98a rathgar road, dublin ire
on january 6th, 2024 from 18.00

we’re so excited to announce the launch of our first book, ‘kind ground, black butter’ with lucy hodge-sellers, which we’ll be celebrating in dublin in the early days of the new year. we are lucky enough to be sharing this event with the artist martin de porres wright, whose works in turf speak meaningfully to our written words.

part anthology and part transcribed conversation, ‘kind ground, black butter’ probes at the role of poetry as a decolonial practice and as a tool for resistance in the revival of marginalised languages. it sits in the context of ireland, with poems from renowned irish poets seamus heaney, nuala ní dhomhnaill and matthew sweeney as well as archival imagery from the dúchas collection, all of which anchor winding conversation on the topic throughout the book. more focused on exploration than presenting knowledge, this publication seeks to act as a point of entry into the folds of linguistic resistance.

martin’s poignant sculptural and painterly work speaks ‘about the beauty and mystery of our ancient boglands’, highlighting their indefinable and timeless qualities, and reminding us of how much of our history and identity is held within them. to see more of his work, visit his website here.
there’ll be readings, discussion about language and poetry and peatlands, drinks and art and candlelit warmth and we absolutely cannot wait - we really hope to see you there.

we had the most wonderful evening and couldn’t be more grateful to the friends old and new who joined us there - our first event in dublin, and very definitely not our last
