part anthology and part transcribed conversation, ‘kind ground, black butter’ probes at the role of poetry as a decolonial practice and as a tool for resistance in the revival of marginalised languages. it sits in the context of ireland, with poems from renowned irish poets seamus heaney, nuala ní dhomhnaill and matthew sweeney as well as archival imagery from the dúchas collection, all of which anchor winding conversation on the topic throughout the book. more focused on exploration than presenting knowledge, this publication seeks to act as a point of entry into the folds of linguistic resistance.

mnemotope is our community magazine, the name of which comes from a term that’s used in writings about archaeological finds. a mnemotope is something (often historical) that compresses the viewer’s experience of time; allowing them to be in the period in which the object came to be, at the site when it was excavated and in the museum looking at it.

we started the magazine to gather and hold space for all voices from all backgrounds. we don't put restrictions on grammar, writing style or form, which traditional publishing often uses to exclude people from print. your stories, observations, drawings are just as important as any!!

this edition is quite scenic. most of the pieces bring you to specific places and times, travelling with our contributors as the pages turn. many of the drawings in this edition give off shadowy feelings, soft edges against the crisp writing alongside it. this is what we drew our cover from - two travelling shadows, reflecting the life above them.

this edition is quite atmospheric, with many stories walking a blurred line between fiction and reality. in the voices of our 46 contributors, we’re brought through poems, prose, overheard conversations, wake-up times, engravings, diary entries, translations and much much more.
